The General John R. Guthrie ’42 Scholarship Fund
Sep 2, 2009

"The purpose of the Guthrie Fund is to enable Princeton students to follow the example of General Guthrie’s commitment to the Princeton motto, “In the Nation’s Service” by pursuing commissions in the uniformed services of the United States through their participation in Princeton’s Reserve Officer Training Programs.

This Fund is specifically meant in two ways to encourage Princeton students to pursue commissions. First, by providing substantial financial assistance to Princeton ROTC students who contract for the ROTC Advanced Course (normally in their third or junior year) and who have not received ROTC Scholarship assistance from the military services. Financial assistance would begin as soon as the student contracts to complete the Advanced Course leading to commissioning upon graduation. As such, this assistance is meant to encourage non-scholarship ROTC students to continue in the program until they are commissioned. Second, by offering incentives to students who may be interested in trying out ROTC programs but would otherwise be deterred by financial and time demands, the Fund would support the recruiting missions of the ROTC Programs ..."

From the New Republic: PRINCETON DIARIST ... Military Academy
Feb 7, 2007

A few weeks ago, Andrew Delbanco wrote eloquently in The New Republic about the strange silence of his university in this time of war ("War College," December 11, 2006). Most people don't think of Columbia University as an island of stillness and detachment. In Morningside Heights, as in Israel, any four people usually have eight opinions and express them with articulate fury. Yet Columbia holds its peace about Iraq--and, according to Delbanco, shows few traces of its active participation in America's other wars.

Princeton University, where I work, does feel like an island, "rising," as F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote in 1927, "a green Phoenix, out of the ugliest country in the world"--an idyllic haven, quiet and Gothic. At its best, it resembles the ideal college Lionel Trilling longed for, where students and faculty can ignore the present and study something serious and lasting, such as Linear B. At its worst, it's a bubble--which is how the students often describe it ...

January 27, 2007; Page A9

The year was 1917. At the beginning of the spring semester, the Harvard Crimson reported that 1,000 undergraduates were ready to enlist in the Reserve Officers' Training Program (ROTC), including students from the law school, from other graduate schools, and even members of the faculty. The recent crisis in international affairs had created a need for qualified military leaders, and the editorial hailed the school's vigorous response to it: "That Harvard is the first University to adopt an intensive system of training officers should not be a matter of pride, but rather a basis for the hope that other colleges will establish the same system, and that the foundations of a great citizen army will be laid among our young men."

A draft would spread sacrifice beyond the elite, went the argument, and ensure that the country didn't lose too many future leaders. Contrast this with the run-up to the Iraq War in 2003, when the New York Civil Liberties Union challenged a federal law allowing military recruiters to contact graduating seniors at public high schools. "Students," the organization's executive director said, "have a right to not be bothered by aggressive military recruiters."
