Alumni and Friends of Princeton University ROTC are sad to announce the passing of its long time leader and President, BG (Ret) George D. Eggers, Jr. ‘47 who died December 21, 2009. For over twenty years, General Eggers served first, as President of the Princeton ROTC Advisory Council, and then as President the Alumni and Friends of Princeton ROTC. | rose through the ranks to become Brigadier General in 1973. He was a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, the U.S. Armed Forces Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College, where he also served on the faculty. During the Vietnam War he was battalion commander of the 1st Cavalry Division. He also served in Germany as brigade commander of the 3rd Infantry Division, as Assistant Division Commander 8th Infantry Division, and as the Chief of Staff of VII Corps. His decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with two oak clusters, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Joint Staff Commendation Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. Following his retirement from the Army in 1977, he joined the administration of Princeton University where he served as Director of Development. He also took a year to complete studies for his undergraduate degree (and this was after receiving his MPA from the Woodrow Wilson School in 1965). He was the author of a number of articles and book reviews, and at the time of his death, was writing a novella about the Vietnam conflict. He also held numerous volunteer leadership positions for his Princeton Class of 1947, including five years as president. In the Princeton community, during the early 1990's he headed the board of Trinity Counseling Service. He was a member of the Association of the United States Army, the 1st Cavalry Division Association, the Princeton Club of New York, and the Century Association of New York. He was also an especially ardent New York Yankees fan. George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret ("Mickey"), by his sons, George III and Robert, and by eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at the Princeton University Chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2010, with a reception to follow at the Nassau Club, 6 Mercer Street, Princeton, New Jersey. The interment of his cremated remains, with full military honors, will be at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 6th at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
